Attorney Smith Discusses Emerging Technologies
Feb 01, 2018Orr & Reno’s Maureen Smith delivered a speech at the annual conference of the New Hampshire Association of Natural Resource Scientists (NHANRS) held in Concord, NH on January 19. Smith’s presentation, “Legal Consideration for Emerging Technologies”, focused on the legal risks associated with the use of drones and remote technologies by scientists working in New Hampshire.
“Unprecedented advances in our ability to produce detailed site maps and natural resource assessments through remote technologies are spawning new questions about the regulatory framework and sometimes conflicting private rights and obligations. Increased reliance on remote technologies, high resolution photography and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) is changing the process and production of data collection efforts and raising new legal questions about property rights, privacy concerns, and potential civil and criminal liability,” Smith remarked.
NHANRS is a membership of wetland scientists, soil scientists, biologists, foresters, surveyors, ecologists, state and municipal employees and citizens who work to promote the science of New Hampshire’s wetlands and soils.
As the chair of Orr & Reno’s Energy & Environmental Practice Group, Smith represents business and individual clients and collaborates with a team of energy, environmental and real estate attorneys in a broad range of regulatory matters including: project development, acquisition, siting, permitting, regulatory compliance and enforcement.
